Note: This first launch of Inkscape can take a while because it will cache fonts installed on your system. Point to XQuartz in your Applications/Utilities directory. A prompt will ask about the location of X11. Add Inkscape to your Applications folder.
Restart the computer or log out and back in to complete the XQuartz installation.Specific instructions on installing XQuartz and support are found at the XQuartz web site. dmg file (64bit) is for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and later and requires XQuartz. If you can help with packaging for OS X, please get in touch with the small group of developers that has formed to work on this together via the inkscape-devel IRC Chat channel or the developers' mailing list.
